Thirty-two arts professionals from across the country gathered in Los Angeles last July to take part in the League of American Orchestras’ Essentials of Orchestra Management program. Participants in the intensive ten-day seminar learn from a faculty of field leaders as they explore the fundamentals of orchestra management as well as the changing nature of orchestras and the new values, roles, and practices that are emerging as orchestras evolve. Essentials participants are selected through a competitive process, and the 2017 participants came from orchestras and performing arts organizations nationwide; find the complete roster at https://americanorchestras.org/learn/leadership-management/essentials-of-orchestra-management/. Since its inception in 2000, more than 400 professionals have participated in Essentials, including many who now hold key leadership positions in orchestras. Hosted by the University of Southern California (USC) Thornton School of Music, the seminar was presented in association with the USC Arts Leadership Program, the Association of California Symphony Orchestras, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Essentials of Orchestra Management is made possible by generous grants from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
